When I look back on my 20s and early 30s, I realize how often I relied on alcohol to navigate social situations. It wasn’t about excessive drinking, but rather about seeking comfort and confidence among others. Over time, I recognized that it had become a crutch—something I leaned on to feel more at ease and outgoing. However, as I’ve matured, I’ve discovered the importance of showing up as my authentic self, unfiltered and unencumbered. I genuinely love who I am, and embracing sobriety has allowed me to fully inhabit my own skin, cultivating clarity and self-acceptance.

I’m not here to judge anyone’s choices, but as I slowed down my drinking, I became more aware of how alcohol shaped the lives of those around me. It’s encouraged everywhere! I saw friends who, though functional, seemed to rely on alcohol, whether casually or through binge drinking. This became even clearer as I entered a phase of personal transformation, seeking a more mindful, intentional life. The more I distanced myself, the more I noticed how pervasive alcohol’s hold can be.

So, I made the conscious decision to go sober… curious. For me, this means cutting out alcohol almost entirely; I no longer drink hard spirits in any form and occasionally have light or zero-proof beverages. Over time, I’ve noticed that my body doesn’t even appreciate alcohol the way it once did—I don’t enjoy the taste, and I definitely don’t like the feeling of being drunk anymore. In fact, I like me way more sober. It wasn’t a dramatic shift but a thoughtful choice to reclaim control over my well-being. Here's why it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and how it transformed my life in ways I never anticipated. Feeling Good, Looking Better

Since I cut out alcohol, the difference is striking. I feel more energized, my mornings are more restful, and my overall mood has stabilized. Gone are the days of dragging myself out of bed after a night of indulgence. Instead, I savor slow, serene mornings and wake up feeling refreshed. It's amazing how much better you feel when you're not nursing a hangover or dealing with the anxiety that comes with it. My skin looks clearer, and my weight has become more stable.

Regaining Control

One of the biggest changes I’ve experienced is a regained sense of control. I no longer rely on alcohol or other enhancements to feel comfortable in social settings. For me, it’s about being authentic and fully present, without substances clouding the experience. I also want to give others my best self and enjoy life’s moments as they come—unfiltered, unaltered, and with complete clarity. I’m really proud of myself for stepping into spaces like networking events, where I didn’t know anyone, and feeling at ease without relying on alcohol.

Embracing Alternatives

While I’ve opted out of alcohol, I haven’t entirely forsaken the world of beverages. I’ve discovered some fantastic alternatives that align with my new lifestyle. Kin Euphorics by Bella Hadid, Recess, and other alcohol-free drinks have become my go-tos. They offer a sophisticated way to enjoy a drink without the downsides of alcohol.

Now I’ll be honest, initially during my sober journey, I would indulge in herbal refreshments like CBD products for moments when I wanted to unwind. But as I’ve deepened my spiritual practice and embraced sobriety more, I've found that I no longer crave those substances either. I’ve come to realize that if I feel the need for something external to feel relaxed or confident, it’s a sign for me to pause and reflect on my inner state.

A Personal Challenge

I’d like to reiterate that I’m not here to judge anyone for their choices; everyone’s journey is unique. I do, however, encourage you to explore your own truth. What does a fulfilling, authentic life look like for you? If you find yourself questioning your relationship with alcohol or any substance, maybe it's time to consider the benefits of a change. It might not be as drastic as going completely sober, but even small adjustments can lead to significant improvements in your well-being and self-awareness.

This message is especially intended for women in their 30s, like me, who may be getting ready for motherhood. As you contemplate whether there’s a different path ahead, it could be an opportunity to take a closer look at your choices. Embracing a sober lifestyle has provided me with clarity, enhanced health, and a stronger connection to myself. I hope my journey encourages you to explore your own truth and uncover what truly makes you feel your best.

Cheers to finding your authentic self—no external substances required.

Note from author: My goal is to be authentic and honest in everything I write. Sober curiosity is fundamentally about self-awareness. I want to emphasize that each person's journey with alcohol or any substance is deeply personal and unique. This entry is not intended to negate or dismiss the experiences of those who struggle with alcoholism; their challenges are valid, important, and often more serious. Above all, I encourage everyone to drink responsibly.

With clarity and strength,

AB
